The Actual Value Of Playing Tug With Your Dog – Professional Dog Training Tips

– There’s a myth out there
that says playing tug of war with your dog can be a really bad thing. I’d like to talk to you
about the positive things that can come out of playing
tug of war with your dog today. I’m Kayl McCann and
welcome to McCann dogs. Playing tug of war is actually a great way to build a relationship with your dog. It’s a really fun exercise
and an excellent way to establish your control, if
the game is played properly. The second thing that’s great about it is it’s a great way to tire a dog out. I have a young puppy
right now and I utilize playing tug every single
day to tire her out so that she behaves
more calmly in our home. And then the third thing
is that you can use the tug to reward your dog for lots of things that they do right throughout the day. Food is a great reward to use, but some dogs actually prefer toys. So if that’s their favorite thing you can utilize that to reward
them for making good choices. One of the biggest myths out there is that playing tug of war with your dog can actually teach your
dog to be aggressive or dominant over you. And it actually can work in reverse. If played properly, you
can actually establish your leadership very
easily in a really fun and non-confrontational way. The first thing you should do is make sure your puppy understands that you’re going to start
the game of tug of war. If you happen to be
holding a toy in your hand, your puppy shouldn’t be allowed
to jump up and grab anything out of your hand without your permission. Try to start off the game of
tug with some type of word, like tug or playtime,
that initiates the play so that you’re in charge of when it starts and also when it ends. When it comes to ending
the game of tug of war be very careful that
you’re not accidentally continuing to engage in play. A common mistake that people often make is giving their out or drop it command while they continue to pull
the toy out of the dog’s mouth. Now, unfortunately, puppies
perceive that as play and the harder you pull,
the harder they tug back. So try to keep the toy
very still and boring in order to teach them to drop the particular toy on command. The last reason why I
like to play tug of war with my puppies is it’s
a great way to teach your puppy bite inhibition. It’s important that my puppy learns that when we’re playing tug together, they shouldn’t put their
teeth on my skin at any time. They can bite the toy, they
can growl, they can play, but it’s very important they’re careful as to where their teeth are
during the entire exercise. If you truly understand the
benefits of playing tug of war with your dog, you will
find that it’s a great way to establish control while
having fun with your puppy. Now if you liked today’s video, make sure you hit that thumbs up button. If today is your first day with us, make sure you hit the heart dog and subscribe to our channel. For now, happy training and see you soon. (instrumental music)
