HUNDREDS WILL TAKE PART IN AN EPIC TUG-OF-WAR ACROSS THE CITY TO BENEFIT FRAZIER, MINNESOTA’S LEADER IN AUTISM SERVICES. MARY MAGUIRE JOINS US LIVE FROM THE EPICENTER OF IT ALL, REGIONAL FALLS PARK IN ST. PAUL. THE SETUP IS ALREADY UNDERWAY. YOU ARE LOOKING GOOD OUT THERE. READY TO POLE. Reporter: IT IS. YOU CAN SEE BEHIND ME WE HAVE FOLKS ON THE BARGES. IT IS A VERY WINDY DAY HERE IN ST. PAUL AT HIDDEN FALLS REGIONAL PARK BUT IT WILL BE A CLASSIC BATTLE FOR THE AGES. 10 TEAMS FROM MINNEAPOLIS TAKING ON 10 TEAMS FROM ST. PAUL. IT WAS NO SMALL FEAT TO GET READY FOR A BIG EVENT LIKE THIS, FOR THE TUG-OF-WAR ITSELF, TEAMS WILL BE STANDING ON BARGES ON THE RIVER. OUR DRONE WAS UP OVER HIDDEN FALLS REGIONAL PARK YESTERDAY SHOWING THEM MOVING INTO POSITION. OUR GROUPS WERE ALSO BUSY SETTING UP BLEACHERS FOR THE MAIN STAGE FOR ENTERTAINMENT. WE ALSO HAVE A GIANT MISTING FAN TO KEEP PEOPLE COOL. WE HAVE SEEN A NUMBER OF TEAMS PRACTICING FOR THE EVENT. WHEN WE SAY PRACTICING WE ARE NOT KIDDING. THE WOMEN OF GLAM DOLL DONUTS REPRESENTING MINNEAPOLIS ARE BRAND-NEW TO TUG-OF-WAR. LUCKILY FOR THEM, DJ’S TUG-OF- WAR CAME BY TO GIVE THEM A LESSON THIS WEEK. THEY WERE TELLING THEM TO KEEP THEIR SHOULDERS BACK, NEVER LET THEIR FEET LEAVE THE GROUND. GLAM DOLL IS MATCHED UP AGAINST MINNESOTA ROLLER GIRLS OUT OF ST. PAUL. EVERY TEAM IS GETTING INTO THE SPIRIT INCLUDING POLICE DEPARTMENTS FROM MINNEAPOLIS AND ST. PAUL. THEY SHARED PHOTOS OF THEM PUMPING IRON. EVEN ONE OFFICER PULLING A CRUISER TO GET READY. HERE’S A LOOK AT ALL TEAMS COMPETING TODAY, THE TWINS AGAINST THE SAINTS, SURLY BREWERY AGAINST BAD WEATHER AND OTHERS INCLUDING OF COURSE TEAM FRANK AND TEAM CHRIS HERE AT WCCO 4. I’VE JUST GOT TO SAY, GO, TEAM FRANK. JEN, I KNOW THAT YOU AND MIKE ARE BOTH ON TEAM CHRIS SO YOU BETTER HAVE YOUR GAME FACE READY BECAUSE WE ARE PREPARING TO BRING IT. WE ARE SET FOR 11:15 THIS MORNING. THE FUN GOES THROUGH THE AFTERNOON WITH THE LAST AT 2:45. OR FAMILIES WANTED TO COME DOWN, IT IS FREE. I WANT TO MENTION AN IMPORTANT PARK — PART ABOUT PARKING, YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO PARK NEAR THE PARK WHERE FOLKS USUALLY DO BUT YOU CAN PARK FOR FREE AT THE OLD FORD PLANT NEARBY AND THERE IS A SHUTTLE. METRO TRANSIT IS ALSO PROVIDING RIDES FOR FREE. FIND ALL OF THAT INFORMATION AT THAT WCCO.COM. I HAVE ONE QUESTION LEFT, JEN. WHAT PREPARATIONS HAVE YOU BEEN MAKING FOR THIS? I WAS WONDERING THE SAME THING FOR YOU SINCE WE ARE RIVALS TODAY. I HAVE BEEN DOING SOME SPECIAL WORKOUTS. YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE WHEN I PULLING THE ROPE. WHAT ABOUT YOU? Reporter: I HAVE BEEN WORKING OUT SO FIERCELY. I HAD TO COME UP WITH A NICKNAME FOR MY BICEPS. THE CHANGING CLIMATE. TO LEARN MORE ABOUT ALL THE ART THAT WILL ON — BE ON DISPLAY, GO TO WCCO.COM/LINKS. MIKE AND I WERE OUT THERE YESTERDAY, IT WAS FUN TO SEE. PEOPLE CAN TAKE METRO TRANSIT THERE OR TO WHERE YOU ARE AT HIDDEN FALLS REGIONAL PARK. YOU ARE THERE WITH CASEY. WHAT’S GOING ON? Reporter: CASEY IS OUR CREATIVE DIRECTOR. YOU INSPIRED US TO DO THIS IDEA, RIGHT? I CERTAINLY HAD A HAND IN IT. Reporter: I FEEL LIKE WHEN IT COMES TO THIS EVENT, AND YOU MAY ARGUE WITH ME ON THAT FROM DAY TO DAY BUT YOU ARE THE BOSS TODAY. WE WILL GO WITH THAT, SURE. Reporter: MARY WAS TALKING SMACK ABOUT HER BICEPS. I BROUGHT SCISSORS. CAN I CUT THE SLEEVES OFF OF MINE? YOU ABSOLUTELY SHOULD. THIS IS A NO SLEEVES KIND OF DAY. NO BLOOD DRAWN? THANKS, CASEY. WE WILL SEE YOU LATER. COME ON DOWN TO HIDDEN FALLS REGIONAL PARK. 9:00 I IS WHEN THE FESTIVITIES GET UNDERWAY, BUT YOU CAN SAY HELLO TO US THROUGH 9:00. AND WE ARE LIVE AT HIDDEN FALLS REGIONAL PARK IN ST. PAUL, GETTING READY FOR PULLING TOGETHER. AND IT’S NOT JUST US, IT’S THESE GUYS. THESE GUYS ARE HELPING TO SECURE HISTORY ON ONE OF THE TWO BARGES, THAT ALL OF THE TEAMS WILL BE STANDING ON TO TALK ACROSS THE RIVER. WHEN IS THE LAST TIME THAT YOU’VE PLAYED TUG-OF-WAR? WE GOT SOME INSTRUCTION AT HASTINGS MIDDLE SCHOOL. WE WERE ON THE SAME TEAM FOR THAT ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO. Reporter: BUT THAT HAS CHANGED TODAY. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST TIP THEY GAVE YOU? Reporter: TO KEEP YOUR CENTER — WAIT A MINUTE. WHY AM I TELLING YOU THIS? YOU ARE ON THE OTHER TEAM. FORGET IT. LEAN FORWARD AND BE AS OFF- BALANCE AS POSSIBLE IS THE TIP THAT THE KIDS GAVE US. WARRIORS 137-116 LAST NIGHT. MONDAY’S GAME IN OAKLAND WILL BE ANOTHER MISSED — ANOTHER MUST WIN GAME FOR THE CAVALIERS WHO TRAIL THE WARRIORS 3-1. TALKING ACROSS THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER TO PULL TOGETHER FOR FRASER. HUNDREDS WILL TAKE PART IN OUR EPIC TUG-OF-WAR TO RAISE FUNDS FOR MINNESOTA’S LEADER IN AUTISM SERVICES AND ALSO HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF FUN ON THE WAY. MARY McGUIRE JOINS US LIVE NOW. THIS TUG-OF-WAR HAS ALREADY WAIVED — RAISE WELL OVER SIX FIGURES. PRETTY INCREDIBLE. Reporter: IT IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. JUST A LITTLE BIT OF FUN. YOU CAN SEE THAT MIKE AND I HAVE JUST BEEN HAVING A BLAST OUT HERE AT HIDDEN FALLS REGIONAL PARK. THEY HAVE ACTUALLY JUST FINISHED SETTING UP THE BARGES. BUT THIS EVENT IS ALL FOR AN AMAZING ORGANIZATION IN MINNESOTA. WE DO WANT TO PULL UP THE TOTALS TO SEE JUST HOW MUCH MONEY WE HAVE RAISED FOR THEM. NEARLY $98,000 RAISED BY THE MINNEAPOLIS TEAMS AND NEARLY 93,000 BY ST. PAUL. THAT MONEY WILL GO A LONG WAY IN HELPING FRASER. FRASER IS THE STATE’S LARGEST PROVIDER OF AUTISM SERVICES. IT GIVES LIFELONG SUPPORT TO ADULTS AND CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS. THE ORGANIZATION WAS STARTED AS WE HEAD TO THE HELP OF A MINNESOTA MOTHER. A TEACHER NAMED LOUISE FRAZIER WAS LED TO MINNEAPOLIS. SHE HAS A DAUGHTER DIAGNOSED AS SEVERELY DISABLED. THAT WAS DURING THE 1930S WHEN TREATMENT FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS WAS MUCH DIFFERENT THAN TODAY. EVERYONE TOLD HER TO PUT HER KID IN AN INSTITUTION AS MOST FAMILIES DID BACK THEN, BUT SHE REFUSED TO DO THAT. SHE DECIDED TO OPEN UP A SCHOOL INSIDE OF HER OWN HOME TO HELP HER CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS. EIGHT DECADES LATER, THAT VISION CONTINUES THROUGH FRASER ORGANIZATION THAT HELPS THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN AND ADULTS ACROSS MINNESOTA. TODAY, WE ARE PULLING TOGETHER TO KEEP IT GOING. BACK TO THE EVENT, 10 TEAMS FROM MINNEAPOLIS, 10 TEAMS FROM ST. PAUL. THEY WILL BE DOING A TUG-OF-WAR ACROSS THE MISSISSIPPI. THIS IS THE REAL DEAL. I DID NOT KNOW WHAT THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT AT FIRST WHEN THEY SAID THERE WOULD BE A TUG- OF-WAR. THERE WILL BE TWO BARGES OUT HERE ON THE WATER, THAT’S WHERE THE TUG-OF-WAR WILL BE TAKING PLACE. THE FIRST STARTS AT 10:15 THIS MORNING. THERE ARE 20 TEAMS PULLING TOGETHER ACROSS THE RIVER. 10 FROM EACH CITY. THE WCCO’S TEAMS WILL COMPETE AT 11:15. COME OUT AND JOIN US, GRAB A BITE TO EAT, DRINK, AND WATCHED HUMANS. HERE’S A LOOK AT THE WCCO 4 PULLING TOGETHER TEAMS. FRANK IS LEADING THE TEAM FROM MINNEAPOLIS AND CHRIS IS LEADING THE TEAM FROM ST. PAUL. SO IT SHOULD BE AN EXTREMELY FUN DAY, OUT HERE AT HIDDEN FALLS REGIONAL PARK. IT WILL BE A STEAMY ONE. SO, MAKE SURE TO DRESS APPROPRIATELY. HYDRATE A LOT. AND ANY EVENT THAT HAS PEARSON’S CANDY AND GLAM DOLL DONUTS, I MEAN, HOW CAN YOU NOT COME? I’M READY TO JOIN YOU ALREADY. A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ASKING ABOUT PARKING. HOW DO PEOPLE GET THEIR INTEREST SHOULD THEY PARK? Reporter: YOU ACTUALLY CAN’T PARK WHERE YOU NORMALLY WOULD IF YOU’RE COMING TO THE REGIONAL PARK. SO, THERE ARE SOME PLACES YOU CAN PARK, JUST ABOUT A HALF- MILE. VERY CLOSE. WE WILL HAVE SHUTTLES BRINGING PEOPLE DOWN HERE CLOSER TO THE WATER. METRO TRANSIT IS OFFERING FREE RIDES TODAY. NO EXCUSE NOT TO COME OUT HERE, ENJOY THE BEAUTIFUL WEATHER.
