Matching Trailer Size to Towing Vehicle l U-Haul Safe Trailering Pt. 2

In this segment, we’re gonna learn how to
match the trailer size to the towing vehicle. Well how do you know if your trailer is too
big to tow with your towing vehicle? The weight of the trailer is very important. It can’t
be too heavy for the tow vehicle, so to learn what the total weight of your trailer plus
cargo is, you need to consult with the Trailer Owner’s Manual, your Car Owner’s Manual or
the instructions on a rental contract. So how heavy can the trailer be? Well, I can
give you some very conservative recommendations. Some trailers are equipped with brakes and
some are not. When you’re towing a trailer like this one, that doesn’t have brakes, you
want to make sure that the loaded trailer does not weigh more than the empty weight
of the vehicle doing the towing. When towing a trailer equipped with brakes, like this
one, it is possible that the loaded trailer weight may exceed the empty weight of the
tow vehicle. It all depends on the trailer design, and the recommendations from the trailer
manufacturer. To find the empty weight of a particular vehicle, you can look it up in
the Car Owner’s Manual, you could call a new car dealer, or you could look it up on the
internet. Again, check your Owner’s Manual or other information that’s supplied with
your trailer, to be specific for the actual trailer that you’re going to be towing.
